GUAXS is a family based German company which focuses on creating high-quality interior design objects and lightening. Our work is deeply steeped in the research of cultures from ancient to modern time and their common traces. In line with this, GUAXS aims for the maintenance of craftsmanship and its local traditions. We transmit these aspects to a contemporary design. At GUAXS, designers and craftsmen produce objects that are created to last. Therefore, we only use sustainable materials, such as metal, leather, wood, natural stone and primary glass, which all have a long-lasting handcraft tradition. Each GUAXS object comes to life as an original plaster form that is modeled in our studio in Germany. According to our designs, the objects are produced in exclusive family owned handicraft factories. Here, it receives the unique style, GUAXS objects are famous for.
Glass GUAXS glass is being produced in small, exclusive factories which are specialized in producing small editions for international artists and designer. The workers usually function as a team. In order to be successful, the teams need a high degree of skill, coordination and force. After a metal form has been prepared in different steps, the process of blowing the glass can begin. To start the process, each worker uses a blow pipe to collect the amount of glass - depending on the size of the object - out of a pot.
Further preparatory steps follow before the glassblower blows the hot glass into a metal form. Due to the sophisticated and typical forms GUAXS is known for this can only be performed by skilled craftsmen. When the work piece has gradually cooled down after a couple of days, the different phases of polishing follow. In several complex and meticulous steps the glass surface is polished by hand. The object thus gets its individual structure and its distinctive/unique GUAXS character. Every single form is a true masterpiece of craftsmanship.
For many years our GUAXS metal objects have been produced in close cooperation with the same metal manufacture, thus guaranteeing the realization of our particular forms by elaborate manufacturing processes. A variety of different metals and metal combinations are being used: Aluminum, brass or nickel plated brass are the most important materials. In order to form the materials, several metal plates are hammered by hand into a negative mould. In another working process the several sheets are then combined through a soldering process and the joints are being scattered. Finally, the metal object is being polished and processed.
Our Philosophy of Design
The design of our products is based on a philosophy that both, intuitively as well as consciously, leaves its mark on the experience of form. The effort to create objects having a natural effect, inspiration taken from culture, and manual skills go hand in hand. The search for a new form is a process that needs further explaining. The origin of a new form is situated somewhere between a pool of forms inspired by nature or culture, the process of experience and an instantaneous idea. The evolution of form starting from this spiritual moment finds its way all through the visual dimension of draft and the physical experience of the hands while molding the plaster, yet not into its final form.
Now the artisan joins in this process by working on the material. However, the characteristics of the material are not in contrast with the manual processing, and surfaces are not just additional décor. In fact, the surface becomes an integral part of the object without leaving behind a cold and functional impression. If this succeeds really individual forms begin to develop: Design as an event in itself!
